Beazley Designs of the Year Awards

Design Museum
November 2016

The Story

The ninth consecutive Designs of the Year Awards is far from a static exhibition – each year, the latest and greatest designs are selected and form the exhibition’s content. This year, the exhibition was held in an entirely new space, never before installed in. A highly dynamic exhibition deserved strong design principles.

The Brief

We were invited by Design Museum curator Gemma Curtin to respond to this year’s Awards, creating an entire graphic identity, catalogue, exhibition design, signage and wayfinding as well as, for the first year ever, a globally-reaching interactive digital platform.

“Hato has done an excellent job on the graphics, creating pictograms to represent each theme and colourful banners to signpost each section of the exhibition. The studio also worked on the digital design and has created some charming animations for digital displays.”

Creative Review

The solution

Understanding the Awards as a stage for discussion, opinion and voting and the hugely contemporary nature of the exhibition, we turned our design to a very modern approach of commenting and communication - to the ever popular emoji language.

The Outcome

Our emoji library has informed 2d design from marketing collateral to a globally reaching digital installation. This year’s nominations sees both categories for awards and emerging themes of design for the year. Our Opinion sharing is no longer constrained to words - our tongue-in-cheek take on commenting culminated in a fun interactive voting platform at the exhibition’s final gallery and an online version, with results animating in real-time as people cast their opinions of this year’s nominees.
