About us

At Hato we specialise in using design to engage and inspire communities and people around us. We work with some of the world’s most innovative social networks, cultural institutions, lifestyle brands and small-scale community groups, our projects focus on giving people the tools to collaborate and express their ideas through design.

We’ve designed inflatable sculpture parks in Hong Kong to school playgrounds with the Liverpool Biennial, crowd sourced a visual identity, crafted perception-defying exhibitions for the Wellcome Collection to co-creating a cookbook with Facebook.

What we do

Hato offers a wide scope of services from branding, art direction, curation and publishing to developing digital tools and educational resources, exhibition and interpretation design. Whether you’re looking for complete strategic guidance for a new project or for a bespoke campaign to complement your existing work, we aim to work closely with stakeholders to create meaningful experiences, that are educational, inspiring, and effective.

At Hato we are committed to the concept that a co-creative approach can generate better ideas with a high degree of originality, value and engagement. We have become industry experts in applying this ethos across a broad range of disciplines — from publishing and exhibition design to digital, workshops and interactive learning tools.

Hato Press

Integral to our practice is continued learning, experimenting and innovation through the creation of our own studio projects and the delivery of workshops. Our sister company Hato Press, a risograph printers, supports the studio allowing us to publish the work of friends, collaborators and people we admire. Our workshops cover learning calligraphy, terrarium making or even Korean culinary delicacies inspired by the films of Scorsese.
